Since the 3.0 patch, the 1% miss cap has been removed for spells, thus 17% hit is required for a naked, untalented priest to never miss on a raid boss. Always aim to get near (in other words never be far lower or far higher than) the hit cap, which is 288.55 hit rating at level 80 with 3/3 Shadow Focus and 3/3 Misery for non-draenai. Spell hit is factored into the value of an item, but remains separate from the main calculation since spell hit rating is 0 once hit-capped.

There are two ways to use the hit numbers:
1) Ignore the orange pseudopower numbers and only use the white to reach the highest total possible. If you're not nearly hit-capped then decide on which piece of gear(or a gem) will offer the best +hit gained:PP lost ratio while being mindful of exactly how much +hit is needed.
2) Use only the orange pseudopower numbers(or white for items without hit) and count each point in Shadow Focus/Misery as 34.36 PP to reach the highest total possible. Remember though that hit rating is worth 0 once hit-capped, so this method will only work when total hit rating is at maximum a few points above the required amount at the given level of Shadow Focus/Misery.

* 263 hit is the cap with 6 points between Shadow Focus and Misery and with a Draenei in your group
* 289 hit is the cap with 6 points between Shadow Focus and Misery
* 315 hit before you can go to 5 points between Shadow Focus and Misery

Actually T8 4-piece set bonus on each item needs to be calculated in another way, here are my thoughts:

Equip 1st piece: 0PP bonus.
Equip 2nd piece: 72PP bonus, that's 36PP bonus for first two items.
Equip 3rd piece: 0PP bonus.
Equip 4th piece: 82PP bonus, that's 41PP bonus for last two items, or 20.5PP bonus for all four items.

However, you cannot distribute 2-piece set bonus among 4 items.

So if you're wearing four set pieces, to compare them with another items you can either:
1) add 36PP bonus to any two of them and 41PP bonus to another two
or
2) add 56.5PP bonus to any two of them and 20.5PP bonus to another two.

Considering there are 5 pieces of the set, and it's impossible to dictate which order a player may receive them in, how would one go about choosing which 2 items would get the bigger bonus, which 2 items would get the smaller bonus, and which 1 item would never get a bonus?

Also your options for comparing items are just as faulty as the current method, because if you're looking solely at items in a single slot, the removal of the set piece will have an effect elsewhere that should affect your decision. Even if items we're listed with the full bonus shown for 2P and 4P applied to each set piece the problem would still exist when dropping the 4-piece bonus.(Or rather it could seem like keeping the bonus would be the best option, but a different item coupled with the 2-piece bonus alone may be worth more)

It's pretty well known that when dealing with set pieces and the bonuses, you need to compare pieces in two(or four) slots to see what the best combination is.
